Overview
What an incredible week!
We spent the week living next to a small town in Mississippi called Macon. In 2010 this town was voted the poorest in America. Besides serving in this town we also got to built a lot of relationships with the kids living on the local Choctaw Native American reservation! Here’s an overview:
We stayed in an old fashion southern house built in like 1910 kept by local mennonites, one of whom we got to meet! Named Rachel she came over almost every night and baked the most delicious cookies. Her presence was really sweet, a bit like my grandmother. She spent her week serving and getting to know us, which we were all so grateful for 🙂
Construction
During The daytime we got to spend time helping refinished churches either in Macon or on a local reservation. I spent most of my time at a church called Pearl River Bible Church which was located on the pearl river reservation. The church had been damaged by flooding sometime in January we spent a lot of our time sanding, painting, reframing doors, etc. personally these were some really fun days because I got to use my electrical skills! My time was spent putting in new outlets and switches while making friends with the pastor’s Sons.
Some Friends I made! (Currently on the roof)
Friends
A big part of our ministry in Mississippi was building relationships with the kids who lived on the reservation. Really eye opening to see, Most of these kids come from really poor families and some don’t have both parents. Yet in the midst of this, the community on the reservation was really close. I got to hang out with lots of kids around middle school age, we went to youthgroup and church with them and spent our Saturday playing with them on the reservation playing basketball and football.
And yeah to be honest a lot of our ministry has seemed really simple, but it’s showed me a part of God and how the He truly wants us to do things with him and not for him. His Heart is that of a father. A little kid can’t really do much for his Dad but he can do a lot with his dad and that’s really what brings each of them Joy 🙂
