“Been About It” by Andy Mineo, Lecrae
during our time in South Africa, my team, Naya, lived with another team, Harvest. We were Narvest. Team Narvest, thanks to Ella and Hannah, played this song a lot. we constantly were “Whoop Whoop”ing.
“Wham Bam Shang-A-Lang” by Silver
our house mom, Wendy, made such an amazing butternut squash soup with sourdough bread. one of the nights we had soup, I thought of this song because I thought the lyrics were “Soup! Soup! Shang a lang”. My mistake.
“Friend Like Me (End Title)” by Will Smith, DJ Khaled
Narvest had a movie afternoon and watched the live action Aladdin. this banger of a song played at the end and me and Clarie loved it.
“Stolen Dance” by Milky Chance
on one of our off days of ministry, me, Katie Jean, and Clarie found a little coffee shop to get some wifi. after getting a piggyback ride from Clarie, we made it to cafe Verde Vida. it was the cutest, retro shop filled with costumers over the age of 65. I loved it. the music they had playing went from early 2000s pop, like this song, to Eleanor Rigby.
“Lip Gloss” by Lil Mama
Hannah, member of Team Harvest, always requested this song and played it often in the guest house.
“Waka Waka” by Shakira
on the way to the airport, we played this song as a way to say goodbye to Africa.
“Baby Tjoklits” by Gerhard Steyn
one night of ministry, my team was asked to run game night at the nearby school. the majority of the students chose to do karaoke instead so we ended up just jamming with a bunch of South African teens to Adele. they played this song and they went crazy while we, the Americans, were confused. but I liked this song.
“War” by Caleb Gordon
who doesn’t love reggae Jesus music? this song kept popping up on Instagram for me. this song was fun to jam to while I was sorting papers at school.
“Gold” by Britt Nicole
after going on many short-term mission trips to Hungary, the last one that I went on, we taught the kids a dance to this song. Somehow, still, remembering the moves, during school breaks, I would teach the girls in my class the moves. They loved learning new dances from me and I also loved having them teach me their own dances
“golden hour” by JVKE
our driver, Ryn, always played this song each morning when he drove us to school. Some people on my team didn’t like that he played the remix version of this song, but I didn’t mind terribly.
“Stick Season” by Noah Kahan
once again, this was a major song that Ryn played.
“The Prodigal” by Josiah Queen
when we first got to South Africa, I was in a really rough spot emotionally. on top of that I was in a cast and on crutches and Jeffrey Bay, the town we were living in, was full of so many fun things to do that I physically wasn’t able to do. On our first day there, I remember crying out the Lord and the main phrase that I just kept praying was “Lord be my great comfort”.
I kept saying that phrase over and over again, asking that I would only find joy, peace, love, and comfort only in Him.
I wanted to run to Him only.
