I will never be able to go home until I die. That’s a sobering realization to come to. Heaven is our eternal home, and everything on earth is temporary. Another side of that is that home is where the heart is, and my heart lies splintered across the Nations. I can call this world my home, but it’s only temporary.
Heaven is our final destination, the place we go when we profess with our mouths that Jesus is Lord, and that our sins are washed clean through him. The place where there will be no more crying, sorrow, pain, goodbyes, and the old order of things will pass away. The place we were always meant to end up in before sin entered the world.
One aspect of being called to overseas missions that I feel most people overlook is that there are people who you will meet that make a big impact on your life, and change it for the better. These people will enter into your life through God’s will and they will take up residence in the spaces of your heart that hold your love for others. You may even come to realize that they feel like home. This gives us a space in which, when we leave, to go back “home”, we realize we are also leaving home at the same time. This is something I’ve come to realize.
I have met people here in Guatemala, and some of whom are from London, who feel like home. When I’m with them I just feel safe, and like I’m in a space where I can be myself, and don’t have to worry about what others think of me. I know that they love me no matter my past, my mistakes, or my trials. They will stick by my side through it all.
So while I may technically live in Georgia, I would say my home is in heaven, and when not in heaven, it is scattered across the Nations. For I have found a home here in Guatemala, in the people I have met from London, in Canada, and I’m sure I’ll find many more places as I continue chasing out this yes I’ve given to God’s calling on my life.
